The redevelopment of Perry Hall created a unique opportunity for the University to address ongoing deferred maintenance in this 1950’s building, while at the same time improving laboratory facilities within to allow for better space utilization now and for future programs. The building is organized to support a vision which maximizes flexible research spaces, while at the same time encouraging visibility and communication, and establishing “collision space” in support of the overall interdisciplinary mission of the Francis College of Engineering. In an effort to better encourage collaboration, programs in the building are organized to create “thematic focus areas” – co-locating similarly focused research or teaching programs to encourage proximity and interaction between researchers with similar interests. These focus areas include groups in Alternative Energy, Biomedical Engineering/Biomanufacturing, Material Synthesis, and Environmental Teaching which includes a unique three-story instructional distillation column.
