WATERSIDE SUPPORT FACILITY

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences – Boothbay, Maine

Completed with Perkins+Will
.

Though small in size, this waterside research support facility plays a critical role in the overall research mission of the Bigelow Laboratory. The building quite literally links the research campus to the ocean, providing necessary support infrastructure including pumps and filtration equipment which allow fresh flowing seawater to be distributed throughout the campus. In addition to its infrastructure role, the building also supports the water based research of the campus – offering space for planning supplying/loading, and staff lockers and facilities for use in shoreline and nautical research work. The design echoes the aesthetic of the rest of the Bigelow campus, though in a purposeful residential scale typical of the Boothbay shoreline, creating a structure which enhances the beauty of its natural surroundings.
