BIOLOGY SEMINAR INSTRUCTIONAL SPACE

Harvard University – Cambridge, Massachusetts

In historic structures like the Biological Laboratories Building at Harvard, flexibility is critical to ensuring that spaces can meet the versatile needs of a science community. As an instructional environment, this space was designed to support up to 36 students, with a focus on creating a framework that would allow for a wide range of teaching styles within the same footprint. Through the use of visual display surfaces on three walls as well as mobile tables and chairs, the resulting space can easily be reconfigured to support directional style instruction, seminar formats, small group work, and conferencing set-ups – providing a setting suitable for instructional or lab group use to increase space utilization and activity. Balancing privacy and exposure, the space incorporates thoughtful connections with the exterior, adjacent corridors and common area, further advancing the integrated environment developed over many years in the building.
